SHELBY TOWNSHIP, MI –Congresswoman Candice Miller, MI-10, said Friday that she looks forward to reviewing the newly released Macomb County Blue Ribbon Commission on Lake St. Clair report, and assisting in the implementation of the recommendations that will improve this vital asset.
"The original Blue Ribbon Commission report released nearly a decade ago was groundbreaking and brought much needed attention and action to protect the health of Lake St. Clair," Rep. Miller said. "Local, state and federal officials came together to control untreated combined sewer overflows, implemented a water monitoring system, and instigated the development of watershed management programs. This is a great first step—but more needs to be done."
Rep. Miller, who lives on the water in Harrison Township and is an active boater, recognizes more needs to be done as the fragile ecosystem is still showing signs of stress. Among the areas of concern is the fact local beaches continue to be closed because of high E. coli levels and Algal blooms.
In Congress, preservation of our water ways has been one of Rep. Miller’s principal advocacies since she was elected to Congress. Earlier this year she brought a field hearing of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee to Port Huron. She also fought for the passage of legislation that would stop ballast water discharges in the waters by ocean vessels; obtained funding for water quality monitoring systems in the St. Clair River and Lake St. Clair and voted for the passage of the Water Resources Development Act, which authorized $20 million in federal support to implement the Lake St. Clair Management Plan.
"I look forward to reviewing the national and international recommendations in the report, and working with my colleagues in Congress to protect this national treasure," Rep. Miller said.
