Gohmert: Liberal Leadership Adjourns While High Gas Prices Continue to Hammer Americans

WASHINGTON, D.C. In protest to the Majority Leadership’s months of failures to address skyrocketing gas and energy prices, U.S Rep. Louie Gohmert (TX-01) voted against this week’s adjournment for Congress’ August recess. 17 Democrats also voted against adjournment, demonstrating the increasing alienation by members of Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s own party from her San Francisco anti-energy policies.

Gohmert argued, “Americans can’t just adjourn for five weeks from outrageous energy prices, so Congress should not leave until we get the American people some relief they deserve. The only way that the United States will see relief is to increase our energy supply. That means drilling in ANWR and the OCS while pursuing oil shale and investing in alternative energies. That means bringing these solutions to the floor of the House for an honest, open debate and a fair vote like Americans and bi-partisan Members of Congress have demanded. This alone would bring down speculation costs. However, because of this Majority’s Leadership’s eagerness to get out of Dodge, it is East Texans and the rest of Americans who will continue to pay the price.  We should not adjourn - our work here is not done.”

Some have noted that despite the unfinished business, the liberal House Leadership will not be deterred from leaving town, and the San Franciscan Speaker will head out in her personal jet that is more than twice the size of any previous jet used by a Speaker of the House.

While Americans have been plagued for months by outrageous, burdensome gas prices, the Congressional liberal Leadership has refused to allow legislation to come before the House floor that would open up access to American energy resources. Instead, they have put off providing relief by stalling with misleading political gimmicks, including suing OPEC, attacking oil companies which are already pursuing energy production, and taking 10% out of our Strategic Petroleum Reserve and replacing it with the same amount of thicker crude oil. Though the past months have provided plenty of time to address meaningful energy solutions, Democratic Leadership has instead allowed the schedule to be filled with unrelated votes that do not reflect America’s top priority of addressing skyrocketing energy prices.

Conservative Members have offered several bills supported by both Republicans and Democrats which will increase the supply of American domestic energy and immediately begin to lower costs. Most recently Congressman Gohmert cosponsored H.R. 6566, the American Energy Act, an “all of the above” energy strategy that promotes short and long term solutions toward American energy independence.  Gohmert has been an outspoken advocate for drilling for oil and natural gas within the Outer Continental Shelf (OCS) and Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR), while also supporting the development of alternative resources such as solar, wind, hydrogen, and nuclear energies as long term solutions. He is currently working on his own legislation that will encourage development of multi-megawatt electricity storage that could provide the ability to achieve virtually all of America’s energy needs from solar power.
