PROPERTY TAX RELIEF FOR NEW JERSEYANS IN 2008

A provision which was origingally introduced by Sen. Menendez in 2006 and included in the recently enacted Federal Housing Rescue and Foreclosure Prevention Act will provide additional tax relief to homeowners who do not itemize on their federal tax returns. The law allows single-filing property taxpayers to take an additional standard deduction of $500 and joint filers to deduct $1,000 for state and local property taxes paid. According to the New Jersey Department of Taxation, nearly 600,000 New Jersey seniors, disabled veterans, low income constituents, and empty nesters will benefit.

MENENDEZ PLAN FOR LOWER GAS PRICES, STABLE ENERGY FUTURE

  • Lower gas prices now:
  • Unchecked speculation on the oil trading markets has driven oil prices higher; Senate Democrats have strong proposals to clamp down on oil speculation. In addition, they have called for oil to be released into the marketplace from the 97%-full Strategic Petroleum Reserve.
  • No more federal handouts for oil companies:
  • Instead of giving oil companies that are making record profits even more handouts, Senator Menendez is a lead sponsor of legislation that will spur domestic oil production by pushing them to begin utilizing the 68 million unused acres that they have under lease.
  • Break our dependence on oil:
  • In order to protect American families from continuing to get slammed by wild spikes in oil prices, Sen. Menendez has been a strong advocate for low-cost, modern, advanced, clean energy, which can create jobs.

SENATOR MENENDEZ ON ENERGY

Senator Menendez speaks about Democratic energy proposals to lower gas prices, hold oil companies accountable and break our dependence on oil.

SENATOR MENENDEZ DEBUNKS MYTHS OF COASTLINE DRILLING

Senator Menendez took to the floor of the Senate to deliver a speech debunking the myths of coastline drilling and proposing alternative solutions for lowering gas prices in the short term. Coastline drilling would not produce a drop of oil until 2017 and would not lower gas prices ever. Instead, Senator Menendez calls for a crackdown on unchecked oil speculation and diverting oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve to the marketplace to lower gas prices in the short term. He has helped introduce legislation to push oil companies to utilize the 68 million acres of unused land already leased to them to spur domestic production. And he supports transitioning to a transportation model based on renewable energy and advanced alternative fuels.

To Receive Stimulus Check, You Must File By October
Most taxpayers should have received their stimulus checks from the Economic Stimulus Package, either by mail or direct deposit. Senator Menendez worked hard to ensure that over 20 million seniors living on Social Security and 250,000 disabled veterans would be eligible to receive a check. If you haven't filed a tax return yet, you must file by October 15 in order to receive a rebate check.

What you need to know about Digital Television (DTV) Transition
In 2005, Congress set a hard deadline of February 17, 2009, for television stations to replace traditional analog broadcasts with digital broadcasts, known as the "Digital Television Transition (DTV Transition)", and was done to expand service and provide more options to consumers.

If you currently rely on rabbit ears or a roof top antenna AND have an analog television, after February 17, 2009, you no longer will be able to receive television programming that way.
