NELSON STATEMENT ON FARM BILL AGREEMENT

April 25, 2008 - Nebraska's Senator Ben Nelson released the following statement on the announcement that an agreement has been reached on the Farm Bill:

"This afternoon's announcement that an agreement has been reached on the Food and Energy Security Act of 2007 is a promising development. It is my understanding that the controversial above the baseline spending levels have been ironed out and that the agreement will be presented to the conferees on Monday.

"While this is a step in the right direction, we must make sure that this bill includes programs such as the microenterprise program, rural development initiatives, and true payment limitations, while ensuring we have an effective safety net for farmers and ranchers.

"I look forward to seeing the final bill once the conferees have had a chance to look it over on Monday."
