NELSON: FUNDING FOR TRANSPORTATION, HOUSING PROGRAMS APPROVED

Earmarks and Support for Transportation and Housing Projects Pass Out of Committee

July 10, 2008 - Today, Nebraska's Senator Ben Nelson announced that the Appropriations Committee adopted a bill granting Nebraska constituencies more than $3.1 million in direct funding earmarks for transportation, job training, education and community housing projects included in the Fiscal Year 2009 Transportation, Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Appropriations bill.

"Education, mobility, and a place to live are some of the most essential elements of ensuring a successful community and healthy population," said Senator Nelson. "I am pleased the Appropriations Committee has supported this valuable work in our state, helping those most in need."

Senator Nelson also noted he was happy to see funding included for the Rulo Bridge.

"This collaboration between Nebraska and Missouri to replace the Rulo Bridge will address a major safety concern in southeast Nebraska and I am hopeful this funding will be the initial step in the process to provide a safe roadway," said Nelson.

The bill contains direct funding for the following Nebraska projects:

  • Non-Profit Center and Job/Education/Training Resource Center, Lincoln: $1,000,000
    The Non-Profit and Education /Training Center (NPETC) will be established to provide education and job training skills to facilitate the advancement and success for low-income families.
  • College Center at South Sioux City: $500,000
    For construction associated with a new collaborative education center in South Sioux City, Nebraska.
  • St. Monica's Community Center, Lincoln: $440,000
    For construction of the new St. Monica’s Community Center for low-income women and their families in need of substance abuse and mental health treatment.
  • Replacement of the Rulo Bridge, Falls City: $1,200,000
    For construction of a new 4-lane bridge and adjoining roadway improvements.
