A crucial intelligence bill giving authorities needed tools to help prevent terrorist attacks was signed into law by President Bush today. Congressman Dan Lungren, member of the House Judiciary Committee, today issued the following statement on the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) of 2008:
"Today is an important day for our country and the American people. The Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act of 2008, which was signed into law this afternoon by the President of the United States, is the most important piece of legislation we have passed during my time serving the 3rd congressional district of California. A lot of hard work and debate has gone into this legislation, and our country is better for it."
"Following the horrific attacks of 9/11, it was clear our intelligence agencies did not possess the tools they needed to collect information and effectively share that information with other intelligence organizations. "This FISA modernization delivers needed improvements, safeguards the civil liberties of every American, and adds critical retroactive liability protections for telecommunications firms that came to the aid of our government after September 11. "After today our intelligence agencies will be more effective in monitoring our overseas threats, while at the same time we have provided increased oversight by Congress and the Inspector General of the United States. "One of the main duties of Congress, as stated in our Constitution, is to provide for the common defense. I am committed to defending the American people, as well as our service members abroad, from terrorists plotting to kill us and our allies. Today is a good day for the defense of America." |
