Congressman Souder's Position

During the Armenian Genocide of 1915-1923, hundreds of thousands of men, women, and children were driven from their homes, starved, beaten, and shot by the government of the Ottoman Empire (present day Turkey). Government-orchestrated intimidation, government-sponsored deportations, and government-perpetrated slaughter are the hallmarks of the Armenian Genocide. To this day, Turkey denies these events occurred, and works feverishly to keep others from acknowledging the events.

The Armenian Genocide is known as the first genocide of the 20th Century. Unfortunately, it was not the last. Throughout the 20th Century and into this century, millions are dead because of murderous policies designed to eradicate certain groups of people. I believe it is important to remember the Armenian Genocide because the same hallmarks of that atrocity continue today in places like the Sudan and Burma.
