Congressman Souder's Position
Most American employers are small businesses. They are most sensitive to changes in the economy and changes in regulation. A downturn in the economy or stricter government control can be the end of a small business. At the same time, however, it is often small businesses that herald the beginning of better economic times. Whether it is the start of a new small business or an expansion of an existing business, this type of commercial activity often drives growth.
As a former small businessman, I am acutely aware of the problems of small businesses. One of my goals since coming to Congress is to support legislation to help small businesses grow. Targeting tax breaks and regulatory relief are two of the best ways to help small businesses survive and thrive.
Without small businesses, the United States would not have attained the success it currently enjoys. Throughout our nation’s history, small business has driven our country forward. There isn’t a large or medium-sized corporation that didn’t start as a small business.
