Congressman Souder's Position
The economy of the United States is increasingly affected by trade. Furthermore, American dominance in the global economy is no longer assured. As many of the Asian economies, particularly China, have developed, the American economy has faced stiff competition. The American economy is up to the challenge. Our economy continues to be dynamic and on the forefront of invention and innovation.
Unfortunately, in many instances American ingenuity and productivity are not enough. This is because the United States faces competition from countries with subsidized economies, manipulated currency, and little-to-no regulation. My goal is to combat these practices and ensure Americans compete on a level playing field.
Part of my strategy has been to open new markets to American and Hoosier businesses and agricultural products. Through a number of free trade agreements, these businesses have gained new or better access to global markets. The key to these agreements is to make sure they benefit the United States and particularly businesses here in Indiana. I believe the agreements made in the last few years help lock in fair trade with our trading partners, and secure access for American goods, products, and services.
