Congressman Souder's Position
Where people once only had a single telephone in their homes, people today have several telephones at home, one in their pocket, and access to the Internet. In just a few short years, the traditional thinking about telecommunications has been swept away. The laws and regulations governing this sector of our economy have not been able to keep pace with such fast moving changes. The 10-year old Telecommunications Act has proven to be inadequate, and Congress must re-examine its policies.
Because of the speed of innovation, it is best for the government to take a step back and let the market work. The government should not micro-manage the telecommunications industry by dictating prices, competition, and products. Instead, it should act as a referee ensuring competition among the companies offering products and services.
Innovation spurred on by competition has benefited consumers in Fort Wayne and New Haven. Verizon, one of the five largest non-government employers in northeast Indiana, has rolled out an advanced fiber optic network which can deliver faster broadband services. This kind of innovation is stifled if the government over regulates or places too many demands on companies.
