Souder Cosponsors the Main Street USA Energy Security Act
Bill Would Move Our Nation Toward Energy Independence and Security
June 2, 2008
Stopping at gas stations throughout northeast Indiana, U.S. Rep. Mark Souder announced today that he is cosponsoring H.R. 6001, the Main Street USA Energy Security Act, which would move the United States toward energy independence and security.
H.R. 6001 would:
- Permit responsible domestic oil exploration in the Alaska National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR);
- Open up more areas of the Outer-Continental Shelf (OCS) for domestic oil exploration;
- Increase efforts to bring clean, emission-free nuclear power onto the electricity grid;
- Utilize the United States’ coal to produce electricity, diesel automotive and jet fuel;
- Increase the number of domestic refineries (no new refinery in the United States has been built since 1976);
- Call for research and development in coal, biomass and ethanol technologies; and
- Grant tax credits to help grow renewable energy projects, such as wind, solar and geothermal, so as to improve our energy efficiency and technologies.
H.R. 6001 has been referred to five House committees (Natural Resources, Energy and Commerce, Ways and Means, Armed Services, and Science and Technology) for further action.
