Woolsey Supports Veto Override of Medicare Legislation | July 15, 2008 | |
| -President’s veto of effort to protect seniors strongly rejected-
Washington, DC – Congresswoman Lynn Woolsey issued the following statement after the successful veto over-ride of H.R. 6331, the Medicare Improvements for Patients and Providers Act. President Bush vetoed the legislation, which would ensure that millions of seniors and disabled Americans continue to have access to their doctors by preventing a 10% cut in physician reimbursement rates, on Tuesday morning.
“It’s outrageous that President Bush has chosen to veto legislation that would allow millions of seniors and disabled Americans on Medicare to see the doctors that they know and trust. If we allow this rate cut to take place, some doctors may be forced to close their doors to our seniors, who will be left on their own to get the care that they need.
“This situation is particularly urgent for doctors in Sonoma County who, because of an outdated geographic payment program, already receive lower reimbursement rates then doctors in neighboring counties. It’s an unfair system, and our seniors and disabled Americans are the ones who suffer. That’s why we need to implement a permanent fix to the payment system that reflects the true cost of providing services.” |
