Volusia County Beach Restoration
Due to major hurricanes and severe weather patterns in Central Florida, the beaches along Volusia County's coastline - particularly in Daytona Beach Shores - have been subject to tremendous erosion.

Rep. Mica is currently working with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and Volusia County to address long-term beach stability and restoration.  In January 2004, Rep. Mica secured $99,140 in federal assistance to begin a feasibility study on potential long term solutions to stabilize and renourish the beaches.  If left unaddressed, the County and homeowners could face significant future financial losses should there be another major storm or natural disaster.

Rep. Mica was able to obtain $225,000 in FY2005 and $100,000 in FY 2006 federal funding to conduct a feasability study for restoring the shoreline of Daytona Beach Shores. The feasibility study will determine the costs and benefits of conducting a shore nourishment project on the beaches north of Ponce de Leon Inlet. Due to major tropical storms and major hurricanes, particularly hurricane Floyd of 1999 and the recent hurricanes of 2004, the shoreline in this Central Florida region has been subject to significant erosion.
