Truck Safety

As Florida's senior member of the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure, Rep. Mica has worked to ensure that Florida's highways remain safe to all motorists.  In 2002, Mica sent a proposal to the Florida Department of Transportation outlining several areas to help protect drivers from the dangers of large trucks.  These proposals are listed below:

1) Review and evaluate lowering the speed limit for large trucks, tankers and  hazardous material vehicles; speeds should at lead be reduced during hazardous weather conditions.

2) Consider restricting these vehicles to one or two lanes.

3) Examine diversion of these vehicles to the GreeneWay or other routes during rush hours.

4) Reduce tolls to divert these vehicles onto alternative toll roads.

5) Strictly enforce speed limits on trucks, tankers and hazardous material vehicles.

6) Ask our Metropolitan Planning Organization to expand the Freight Mobility Task Force to review truck safety issues.

7) Review State and federal training and licensing requirements.
