Congressman Watt Urges 12th District Constituents to Participate in Veterans Affairs History Project
Friday, May 23, 2008

CHARLOTTE, NC— Today Congressman Mel Watt (12th District of North Carolina) urged veterans who live in the 12th District to mark Memorial Day by volunteering for the Veterans History Project.  This Library of Congress project creates a permanent collection that preserves the personal stories and experiences of wartime veterans and civilians who served in support of them.  The Veterans History Project relies upon volunteers to collect and preserve audio- and video-recorded oral histories from America’s war veterans and those civilians who served in support of them, along with other first-hand materials such as memoirs, photographs, diaries and letters.

Congressman Watt said, “As we honor those who have fallen in military service to our country, let us mark our continuing gratitude by preserving the personal stories of veterans as a part of the permanent historical record of the nation.  The Veterans History Project team at the Library of Congress has prepared a set of guidelines and forms that should be followed if you choose to participate.  I know they are looking forward to hearing from you and I encourage you to go to their website at www.loc.gov/vets., where you can obtain the information required for participants.”
