NEW! Water Quality Module Uses Data
Changes in water quality conditions have a big impact on organisms living in estuaries. But how is water quality monitored? The NOAA Data in the Classroom website features five activities at different levels to help you learn about monitoring water quality using real data. Explore a curriculum module, for grades 5-8, to learn about Water Quality using real NOAA/NERRS data.
The NOAA Ocean Data Education (NODE) Project's "Monitoring Estuarine Water Quality" curriculum guide contains five activities designed for grades 5-8 that incorporate real data from NOAA's National Estuarine Research Reserve System (NERRS). These lessons and accompanying online tools will introduce students to water quality monitoring using real data. First, students need to understand how to access and interpret water quality data, and how to look for patterns and changes over time. Ultimately, they will examine the impacts of physical water quality factors on species that live in a given environment, using the Atlantic sturgeon as an example. The lessons deal primarily with the following water quality parameters: water temperature, dissolved oxygen, and salinity. However, students can use the online tools to extend their investigations by examining other parameters as well. The goal is for students to experience different kinds of data and data accessing tools, so that, by the end of the module, they can continue to explore data sets driven by their own inquiry.
If you would like to help test and evaluate this curriculum guide, please visit the new Data in the Classroom website (http://www.dataintheclassroom.org/) to register.
Data in the Classroom is an online resource for teachers interested in using real scientific data in their teaching. The NODE Project is developing curriculum for grades 5-8 designed to help teachers and students use real scientific data to explore dynamic Earth processes and understand the impact of environmental events on a regional or global scale. This project consists of three, multi-part curriculum modules, with accompanying interactive web activities, data visualizations and animations.
