Celebrate National Estuaries Day

We invite you to celebrate National Estuaries Day on Saturday, September 27th. In honor of the nationwide event, a multitude of activities are planned for the entire family. Several of the Research Reserves will be offering activities such as guided walks, boat tours, live animal presentations, touch tanks, kayak tours, nature crafts for kids of all ages, estuary games and activities, live music, fish printing and more!

This year, together with National Estuaries Day, we are also celebrating that 30 years ago, the Rookery Bay Reserve near Naples, Florida was established and it was only a 3,700-acre national sanctuary. Today the Reserve’s boundary has been expanded to 110,000 acres, representing one of the nation’s last remaining relatively untouched mangrove-forested estuaries! So, if you are in the vicinty, make sure to visit the Rookery Bay Reserve. A special evening reception is planned for Friday, September 26, to commemorate the establishment of the reserve and recognize some of the key players who came together to help protect this special place.

Plan your own event, visit a Research Reserve, and/or simply commit to taking a child outdoors!  There are many ways in which you can celebrate these magical places where rivers meet the sea. Join us for a fun and educational day!

And, don't forget! Once you complete your activity, we want the world to know about your efforts! Just fill out a simple Tell Us! Form, and your name and action will be featured on the Get Involved section of this website!
