The San Juan NF is 100 Years Old

June 4, 2005 - Durango, Colorado – The San Juan National Forest celebrated its 100th birthday at the same time they celebrated the Forest Service Centennial, June 2 – 4. The huge celebration included concerts, displays, exhibits, lectures, and a parade through downtown Durango, Colorado.

On June 2 the Fiddlin’ Foresters played a concert to a large audience at the Pagosa Springs High School. District Ranger Jo Bridges provided opening remarks and reminded the audience of the importance of the many partners and cooperators in the community. The Fiddlin’ Foresters gave a Centennial program using slides and video which told of the history of conservation and the challenges for the future.

On June 3 the Fiddlin’ Foresters had a chance to tour the impressive Centennial displays and exhibits which were located at Fort Lewis College in Durango. The public learned about the history of the San Juan National Forests, the roots of conservation and looked ahead to the future.

Retiree Steve Kelley coordinated the San Juan Centennial event with expert assistance from San Juan National Forest employee Pam Wilson. “The Forest employees and community have joined together to make this an outstanding event,” said Kelley. “It is great to see us all working together to recognize the importance of the San Juan National Forest.

That evening the Fiddlin’ Foresters provided an outdoor concert at the Fort Lewis College amphitheater. A large crowd of employees, retirees and Durango citizens learned of the importance of public lands to the strength of our nation.

On June 4th the Fiddlin’ Foresters rode on a float in the San Juan National Forest Centennial parade. On display were dozens of great entrees from the forest and partners that showed the variety and diversity of national forest management. It was the first parade ride for the Fiddlin’ Foresters.

Folks on the streets of Durango heard lots of fiddle music as the Fiddlin’ Foresters passed by in the Centennial Parade.
