How to obtain books and articles not found in the Technical Library
A new process for document delivery and interlibrary loan services will soon be available for Sandians. ILLiad is a faster, more functional, paperless alternative to traditional interlibrary loan (ILL) function and document delivery services. The Technical Library has purchased the ILLiad software and will be implementing this process in the near future. More information about ILLiad software can be found at: http://www.oclc.org/illiad. Contact Dell Bayer, (505) 284-8324 for more information.

Items can be requested through the Document Delivery Service's Library Request Form. Customers are encouraged to check the Library's Online Catalog and electronic holdings prior to requesting material. For assistance in locating material contact your reference librarian.

  • Library customers can borrow books, and purchase journal articles, conference proceedings, patents, and other materials not in the Library's collection.
  • Material not owned by the Library will be requested through interlibrary loan or acquired through a third-party document service. Only the costs incurred by the interlibrary loan (loan fee, shipping charge) or the cost of acquiring other materials through the delivery service will be passed on to the customer.
  • Material borrowed via Document Delivery must be returned by hand-carry only to Building 804 (Room 8 in NM and in CA to MO51, Room 114)
    • If the book is lost in transit at Sandia or mislaid by support personnel, the Technical Library is liable for the replacement cost of the book, which we would then recover from you.

For additional information on Document Delivery services in NM email libdoc@sandia.gov. In CA contact Tiffany Vargas at (925) 294-4598 or email cateclib@sandia.gov.

Service Standard

Due to staff changes in NM, ongoing capability upgrades and a recent significant increase in Document Delivery requests, our standard turnaround time commitment will be extended from 7 working days to 10 working days for the next several months. Your patience is appreciated. Please be assured that we will do our utmost to fulfill all requests as quickly as reasonably possible and we are committed to delivering excellent service to our library patrons. Questions may be addressed to Anna Nusbaum.

There will be exceptions to our capability to deliver your requests within the ten days, such as:

  • When the request includes procuring content outside of the Technical Library every effort will be made to get the content within the standard. If it is known at the time of the request that the source of the external content cannot deliver within our standard, you will be informed and given the opportunity to negotiate a different deadline.
  • Extensive search requests or subsequent scope change of the original search request will require a negotiation of a reasonable deadline.

We recognize that there will be times when you may need something sooner than ten working days. Please ask. If we can accommodate your deadline without rearranging other commitments or calling in extra resources, we will do so.

We will acknowledge receipt of your request.

Charges for Services
  • The Library charges for any expenses incurred in getting you the information you need. Usually this relates to the cost to procure an article or report, or the cost of an interlibrary loaned book.
  • As an IES service provider, we are funded to serve the Sandia population so we do not charge for our time. Should you need some dedicated time of one of our library personnel, we would negotiate a reasonable charge for that exclusive use. Feel free to contact either Don Guy or Anna Nusbaum if you have special service needs.

Sandia has a JIT vendor, Page One, for the direct purchase of work related books. To receive Page One's best pricing for the Sandia contract, a project/task number must be provided. Use the Sandia Page One homepage to establish your JIT order form profile for ease of electronic ordering.

Page One is an independent Albuquerque bookstore, located on the southwest corner of the intersection of Juan Tabo and Montgomery Blvds. New Mexico orders are delivered Monday - Friday at 3:00 PM to Building 957 and then sent to the customer via interoffice mail. California orders are shipped commercially to Building 928. Sandia Contract Administrator is Bill Edgar, (505) 844-4456.

Office Journal Subscriptions
If there is journal content you need but not provided by the Library you can now order periodical/journal subscriptions directly with the publisher and pay with a Procurement Card.
