International Highway Transportation Outreach

Legislative authority for the Federal Highway Administration's (FHWA) international activities is found in Section 506 of Title 23 of the United States Code. The code gives FHWA the authority to undertake an international highway transportation outreach program:

  • To inform the U.S. highway community of technological innovations in foreign countries that could significantly improve highway transportation in the U.S.;
  • Promote U.S. highway transportation expertise, goods and services in foreign countries; and
  • Increase transfers of U.S. highway transportation technology to foreign countries.

All FHWA international activities support U.S. foreign policy objectives, Department of Transportation strategic goals, and focus on facilitating more efficient domestic and global transportation systems enabling economic growth and development by ensuring the safe, secure and efficient movement of people and cargo.
