Version 8 TOMS Algorithm

Update: August 23, 2004 -Version 8 data and products of the TOMS processing algorithm are now available on line through the TOMS web site and via anonymous ftp. Data and products for the Nimbus-7, Meteor-3 (as of August 9, 2006), and Earth Probe instruments use the new Version 8 of the TOMS processing algorithm. Data and products for the Adeos instrument are still the result of Version 7 processing with no immediate plans to re-process the Adeos data.

Update: May 26, 2004 - Version 8 data are now available for the entire Nimbus-7 data record (November 1978 through May 1993) and for the Earth Probe data record from August 1996 through August 2003 via anonymous ftp as .zip files. Each .zip file contains the compressed individual files.

Data on the TOMS web site will soon be switched to Version 8 and brought up to date (we are working on extending the calibration now).

Update: May 21, 2004 - Data from Nimbus-7 TOMS (11/1978 through 05/1993) and Earth Probe TOMS (08/1996 through 08/2003) have been reprocessed and will be distributed at the 2004 Quadrennial Ozone Symposium in June 2004. A 2 DVD set contains data and images from both instruments for all of the TOMS products: ozone, aerosol, reflectivity, and erythemal UV. Copies of the DVD's can be obtained from the Goddard Space Flight Center's Distributed Active Archive Center (DAAC)

We have developed a new Version of the TOMS retrieval algorithm. A preliminary Algorithm Theoretical Basis Document (ATBD) is now available. The new algorithm uses a set of fixed standard ozone profiles similar to the previous algorithm and then updates the solution based on a new climatology of ozone and temperature profiles that are dependent on month, latitude, and total ozone. Here is a list of the Version 8 enhancements:

  • Aerosol/Glint correction based on aerosol index
  • New ozone profile climatology
  • New temperature profile climatology
  • Tropospheric ozone climatology
  • Improved surface reflectivity model
  • More accurate radiative transfer in forward model
