Additional Resources

Several reference materials exist that illustrate the need for pedestrian safety and how communities have been designed to ensure safety. Facts & Figures exist that clearly illustrate the safety problems that exist across our nation. Good Practices provides examples of how our communities can be safer. In this section you can learn how good practices can be actually implemented. This may be of interest to planners, engineers, landscape architects, and other designers to review for an overview of safe pedestrian planning and design guidelines.

  • Case Study No. 1: Reasons Why Bicycling & Walking are not Being Used More Extensively as Travel Modes - FHWA - [PDF, 1.27KB]
  • Transportation-Related Land Use Strategies to Minimize Motor Vehicle Emissions: An Indirect Source Research Study - [PDF, 329KB] - The report suggests community-level performance goals that can reasonably be attained in urban, suburban and rural/exurban communities by implementing packages of transportation-related land use strategies in coordination with a multimodal transportation system.- California Air Resources Board
  • Roadway Delineation Practices Handbook - FHWA - [PDF, 5.73MB] - was developed to assist design, traffic, and maintenance engineering personnel in making determinations about roadway delineation systems, including the appropriate system for a given situation, when a system has reached the end of its useful life, and how to maintain a quality delineation system. It may also be valuable to consulting engineers, educators, and students.
  • Zone Guide for Pedestrian Safety Shows How to Make Systematic Improvements - This guide describes what zoning is and explains how to design and use pedestrian safety zones to increase the efficiency and effectiveness of pedestrian safety programs. The guide also provides a brief description of a recent pedestrian safety study that made successful use of the pedestrian safety zone process.
    • Brochure - [HTML, PDF 1.6MB]
    • Full document - FHWA - [PDF, 19MB]
  • Bicycle and Pedestrian Related Publications and Reports Produced by USDOT - USDOT - [PDF, 158KB]
  • Field Test of a Safety Zone Program for Older Pedestrians - NHTSA - [PDF, 1.6MB]
  • Law Enforcement Pedestrian Safety - NHTSA - [PDF, 2.26MB] - This manual is designed as a resource for police agencies needing to solve unfamiliar traffic safety problems. Strategies and solutions for pedestrian safety issues, including overcoming possible obstacles are included. Information on how to develop and implement a pedestrian safety law enforcement program using the "three E" (Enforcement, Education, and Engineering) approach is given.
  • Highway Work Zone Safety - Driver Education Resource Curriculum - KDOT - [PDF, 767KB] - KDOT developed this curriculum module for driver education programs in cooperation with the Kansas State Board of Education (KSBE) in hopes of targeting beginning drivers before they've had a chance to develop bad driving habits.
