CONGRESSIONAL LEADERS ANNOUNCE
OPENING DATE FOR CAPITOL VISITOR CENTER.
WASHINGTON -- The four top Congressional leaders, Speaker of the House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, and House Republican Leader John Boehner, have announced today that the official public opening date for the U.S. Capitol Visitor Center will be December 2, 2008. This is a significant date in the history of the U.S. Capitol as it was on December 2, 1863, that the Statue of Freedom was placed atop the Capitol Building to signify the completion of construction of the new dome. + More
Utility Tunnel Improvement Program
Beginning August 6, as part of the AOC’s Utility Tunnel Improvement Program, work in several manholes located in South Capitol Street will commence. The work will take place between the Capitol Power Plant and D Street, S.W., and will consist of making repairs to steam lines located below the street, which provide heat to the Capitol complex. Flagmen will maintain two-way traffic on South Capitol Street, however parking on the west side of the street will be impacted. Work is scheduled to be completed by mid-October.
Cannon House Office Building Centennial Celebration
It was a century ago that the Cannon Building was completed as the first Congressional Office Building on the Capitol campus. + More
