InPhase Technologies, Inc., Holographic Storage Leader, Named a Red Herring 100 Winner
InPhase Technologies, the world's leader in holographic data storage has been selected as a winner of the annual "Red Herring 100 North America" award by Red Herring magazine.

  • Award recognizes the 100 private technology firms in North America driving the future of technology. This list of 100 privately held companies in North America recognizes those that play a leading role in innovating the technology business. InPhase plans to ship the industry's first holograhic drives, based on the company's patented Tapestry and Trade technology, to OEM customers in the fourth quarter of 2006. The InPhase HDS-300R drive records 300 gigabytes (GB) on a single disk with a transfer rate of 20 megabytes per second (MB), or 160 megabits per second (MB).

Metabolix Garners Environmental Award from Society of Plastics Engineers
Metabolix, Inc. has received the prestigious "New Technologies in Renewable Materials and Processes Award" from the Society of Plastics Engineers for its development of an environmentally friendly family of PHA Natural Plastics produced by fermentation.   • The award, given at a ceremony as part of the Society's Global Plastics Environmental Conference in March, recognizes strong technical innovation and demonstrated leadership in the areas of plastics and the environment. Metabolix was cited for its "unique and patented methods" to make and commercialize its family of polymers "from renewable resources such as sugars and vegetable oils."

Microcell Corporation Receives 2005 Frost & Sullivan Technology Innovation Award for Advanced Energy Sources Market
Microcell Corporation has been presented with Frost & Sullivan's 2005 Technology Innovation Award in the field of advanced energy sources for its outstanding efforts in developing the Microcell™, an advanced extrusion-based proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cell technology.

  • Microcell Corporation has significantly aided the clean conversion of chemical energy to electrical energy, making fuel cells available to all types of end users. The 2005 Frost & Sullivan Technology Innovation Award recognizes the quality and depth of the company's research and development program, as well as the vision and risk-taking that enabled it to undertake such an endeavor.

DuPont Central Research & Development Wins Scientific American 50 Award for thermal printing. The SA50 recognition is specifically on carbon nanotube doped conductive polymers and integration of these materials into printed components. For more information, see ATP Project Brief. (November 2005)

  • DuPont Central R&D in the summer of 2004 reported the first printing of conductive polymers in large sheets using an existing technology. Called thermal printing, it uses a laser to fuse the polymer to a substrate, like an iron-on transfer. This year their researchers reported printing polymer conductors, semiconductors and dielectrics all onto the same surface.

Former ATP Recipient NP Photonics Garners Prestigious 2005 Award.
The Association of University Parks (AURP) has named the Tucson-based NP Photomics the "Outstanding Research/Science Park Company of the Year" at the organization's annual conference in Raleigh, North Carolina. AURP represents leaders of more than 130 of the nation's university-affiliated research facilities.

  • AURP selects the "2005 Outstanding Research/Science Park Company of the Year" from among those research park-based companies that best demonstrate the development of products that show significant potential for successful commercialization or have already met with marketplace success. Raindrop Geomagic Wins the North Carolina Technology Association's Mid-size Company of the Year Award.
The annual NCTA awards recognizes outstanding contributions made by information technology companies and individuals in the state of North Carolina.

  • Raindrop Geomagic was the North Carolina Technology Association (NCTA) mid-size company of the year. Geomagic products enable designers and engineers to transform scan data from physical objects into highly accurate digital models for applications ranging from ensuring the NASA space shuttle Discovery’s safe return, to reconstruction of historic treasures, to new processes that speed quality inspection.   • The Institute for Operations Research and Management Sciences recognized the technical achievements of the Next Generation Procurement Optimization project by selecting Procter and Gamble (and its partner CombineNet) as a finalist in 2005 for the Franz Edelman award, which uses CombineNet's supply chain optimization technology.  The Franz Edelman Award recognizes outstanding examples of innovative operations research that improve organizations—and often change people's lives. The annual Franz Edelman Award competition brings together top examples of innovation from large and small, profit and non-profit, corporate and governmental, American and international organizations. The common theme characterizing all the final competing teams is use of the most sophisticated analytical tools employed in operations research to make a major impact on an organization and the people that it serves.

Raindrop Geomagic's co-founder, Dr. Hermber Edelsbrunner Elected a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
Dr. Herbert Edelsbrunner, co-founder and board member of Raindrop Geomagic and a professor of computer science and mathematics at Duke University, has been elected to the American Academy of Arts & Sciences’ 2005 class of Fellows. (May 2005)

  • Fellows are nominated and elected to the Academy by current members. An accomplished mathematician and scientist, Dr. Edelsbrunner gained international acclaim for his research in algorithms, geometry and topology. He is the only computer scientist to be awarded the National Science Foundation’s Alan T. Waterman Award, and has received numerous government and industrial grants to further his work. Dr. Edelsbrunner is the author of more than 150 research papers and has two books to his credit.

Molecular Imprints, Inc., a global manufacturer of nanolighography equipment, won the EE Times' Annual Creativity in Electronics Award for "Most Promising New Technology,"   beating out IBM, Intel, and two others for this award.  MII's Step and Flash Imprint Lithography (S-FIL) technology was chosen for this award, which goes to a compelling electronic component or enabling technology that is outstanding in its technical design, potential for market impact, and demonstrated leadership in its area.

  • AEA's Publication of the Year Award is presented for a publication (completed in the past five years and published in English) that has been instrumental to the development of theory or practice in the field of evaluation. This publication draws from a body of 45 studies commissioned by ATP between 1990 and 2000 and analyzes the methods and techniques used and examines the findings of those studies. These studies have increased understanding not only of ATP, but also of the dynamics of innovation systems and the relationships between public and private sector funding of R&D.

  • American Express Tax and Business Services, the Maryland Business Incubation Association (MBIA), the Maryland Department of Business and Economic Development (DBED), the Maryland Technology Development Corporation (TEDCO) and Saul Ewing LLP announced the winners of the fourth annual Maryland Incubator Companies of the Year Awards during a reception in Baltimore on June 16, 2004. The awards, whose winners were chosen by a selection committee comprised of venture capitalists and government and business leaders, recognized the achievements of six current and graduate companies of Maryland’s incubators.  TeleContinuity was was awarded the Maryland Incubator Company of the Year award in the technology service category.

  • Neah Power Systems, an emerging leader in micro fuel cell technology, has been named "Start Up Company of the Year" by the Alliance of Angels (AoA), a non-profit organization that connects promising early-stage technology companies with seed capital in the Pacific Northwest.  Neah Power was selected from a group of 200 companies that have presented to AoA members since the organization's inception in 1998 and was the first recepient of this prestigious award.  The award honors achievement and the entrepreneurial spirit of new businesses.

U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's 2002 Presidential Green Chemistry Award Alternative Solvents/Reaction Conditions Category.  For more information, see ATP Project Brief.  (June 2002) 

  • Nature Works™ polylactic acid (PLA) is the first family of polymers derived entirely from annually renewable resources that can compete head-to-head with traditional fibers and plastic packaging materials on a cost and performance basis. For fiber consumers, this will mean a new option for apparel and carpeting applications: a material that bridges the gap in performance between conventional synthetic fibers and natural fibers such as silk, wool, and cotton.

ATP Recipient Dow Chemical Wins The Prestigious U.S. National Medal of Technology
Dow Chemical was awarded the National Medal of Technology "for the vision to create great science and innovative technology in the chemical industry and the positive impact that commercialization of this technology has had on society." For more information, see ATP Project Brief.  (June 2002)

  • The National Medal of Technology is the highest honor awarded by the President of the United States to America’s leading innovators.  Dow received the award for developing new advanced materials, including SiLK* dielectric resin, which was invented, developed, and commercialized by Dow for the fabrication of high performance integrated circuits.

Sarnoff Corporation received an Emmy Award from the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences for “outstanding achievement in technological advancement.”  For more information, see ATP Project Brief.  (October 2000)

  • Sarnoff Corporation received an Emmy Award from the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences for “outstanding achievement in technological advancement” for a unique technology to predict how viewers will perceive the quality of digitally processed TV images or still pictures. Sarnoff organized a NIST Advanced Technology Program project to develop a commercially practical version of the technology, which models the human visual system.

Hybrid Plastics Receives R&D 100 Award
Hybrid Plastics, LLC has announced receipt of an R&D 100 Award from R&D 100 Magazine for its proprietary POSS™ Nanostructured™ Chemical Technology. For more information, see ATP Project Brief. (August 2000)

  • As one of an internationally selected number of new products receiving this prestigious award, POSS™ Nanostructured™ Chemical Technology—a nanoscopic silica- and carbon-based additive for plastics which offers more strength, heat resistance, and decreased flammability than traditional plastics—was recognized as one of the years most technologically significant products in the world. Entries from many of the worlds top companies, universities, and research organizations were judged by an independent panel of 70 experts from a variety of industries. Winners of the award were selected for their technological excellence and strength along with the value that they bring to the marketplace.
