AMES LABORATORY/ISU SCIENCE BOWL RECEIVES DONATION FROM PELLA ROLSCREEN FOUNDATION

$1,000 donation given to support science and math competitions

AMES, Iowa –The Pella Rolscreen Foundation of Pella, Iowa, has presented a check for $1,000 to the 2009 Science Bowl program, sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy’s Ames Laboratory and Iowa State University.

In making the presentation, Foundation Director Mary Van Zante said, “We are pleased to provide a grant to the Science Bowl from Pella Rolscreen Foundation.  Forming a strong foundation in science and math for today’s students is important to the future of Iowa and the entire nation.  We appreciate what you do to promote a healthy competition in these disciplines.”

The Ames Laboratory/Iowa State University Science Bowl consists of both high school and middle school events. The 19th annual Ames Laboratory/ISU High School Science Bowl is tentatively scheduled for Jan. 31, 2009, and will bring 48 teams (240 students) from across Iowa to ISU to compete in a one-day science and math competition. The sixth annual Middle School Science Bowl is tentatively scheduled to be held on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 20-21, 2009, also at ISU.

The middle school competition is a two-day event that combines a hydrogen fuel-cell car race and an academic quiz bowl. Sixteen Iowa teams (80 students) compete in the Middle School Science Bowl. Winners of the Regional Science Bowl competitions receive an all-expense-paid trip to the DOE National Science Bowl in Washington, D.C.

The Pella Rolscreen Foundation seeks to contribute to the civic, cultural, educational, social and physical environment of the areas in which Pella Corporation team members reside through gifts to active, nonprofit, charitable organizations whose purpose coincides with this goal.  The Foundation has a special interest in promoting math, science, and technology in local schools as well as character development through the CHARACTER COUNTS! program.

Ames Laboratory is a U.S. Department of Energy Office of Science laboratory operated for the DOE by Iowa State University. The Lab conducts research into various areas of national concern, including the synthesis and study of new materials, energy resources, high-speed computer design, and environmental cleanup and restoration .
