Welcome to the Gulf of Mexico Outer Continental Shelf (OCS) Region of the Minerals Management Service (MMS).  MMS is a bureau of the Department of the Interior.  Our mission is to manage the mineral resources of the Outer Continental Shelf in an environmentally sound and safe manner.  Please read the Regional Director's Page for a brief overview of activities in the Gulf of Mexico .


Hurricane Gustav/Hurricane Ike Activity Statistics Update as of Monday, September 15, 2008

Minerals Management Service monitors activities for both storms through its Continuity of Operations Plan.

NEW ORLEANS — Offshore oil and gas operators in the Gulf of Mexico are reboarding platforms and rigs and restoring production following both Hurricane Gustav and Hurricane Ike. The Minerals Management Service is monitoring activities for both hurricanes through its Continuity of Operations Plan team. This team will be activated until operations return to normal.  (09/15/2008)


MMS Releases Preliminary Offshore Damage Reports from Hurricane Gustav

Collection of preliminary damage reports slows as Gulf operators prepare for Hurricane Ike.

NEW ORLEANS – The Minerals Management Service (MMS) today released preliminary damage reports for the Gulf of Mexico oil and gas infrastructure resulting from Hurricane Gustav.  (09/11/2008)


Minerals Management Service Monitors Two Drilling Rigs Adrift in Gulf of Mexico

Confirmed reports of two offshore drilling units, MMS, Industry, and US Coast Guard are monitoring their paths.

NEW ORLEANS — The Minerals Management Service has two confirmed reports of drilling rigs adrift in the central Gulf of Mexico. The MMS, industry, and the U.S. Coast Guard are working together to monitor the paths of the two rigs. MMS has determined through a pre-hurricane season risk analysis that there is minimal infrastructure in the areas surrounding these two rigs.  (09/13/2008)


Sperm Whales Reside in Deepwater Gulf of Mexico

MMS Releases Synthesis Report on Six-Year, $9.3 Million Study Project.

HOUSTON – The Minerals Management Service (MMS) today released the results of a six-year, $9.3 million study on sperm whales, an endangered species living in the northern Gulf of Mexico.  (08/21/2008)  


Western Gulf of Mexico Lease Sale 207 Attracts $487,297,676 in High Bids

New Orleans, LA – Secretary of the Interior Dirk Kempthorne announced that the Western Gulf of Mexico Oil and Gas Lease Sale 207, held today in New Orleans, attracted $487,297,676 in high bids.  (08/20/2008)  


Interior Department Initiates New Five Year Oil and Gas Leasing Program for Outer Continental Shelf

Seeks Public Comment to Address Changed Energy Situation

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Saying the nation’s energy situation has dramatically changed in the past year, Secretary of the Interior Dirk Kempthorne today jumpstarted the development of a new oil and natural gas leasing program for the U.S. Outer Continental Shelf.  (07/30/2008)


Minerals Management Service Awards $1.3 Million Grant to Louisiana for Coastal Restoration

Louisiana receives grant for Orleans Land Bridge Shoreline Protection and Marsh Creation Project

NEW ORLEANS — The Minerals Management Service (MMS) has awarded a $1.3 million grant to the State of Louisiana through the Coastal Impact Assistance Program (CIAP) for the Orleans Land Bridge Shoreline Protection and Marsh Creation project.  (07/25/2008)  


MMS moving forward with Alternative Energy Leases on the Outer Continental Shelf

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Minerals Management Service (MMS) announced today that it is proceeding with the consultation and analyses necessary to move toward the issuance of limited leases under its interim policy for authorizing alternative energy data collection and technology testing activities on the Outer Continental Shelf (OCS).  (07/23/2008)


Offshore Sand for Pelican Island Restoration Project in Louisiana

Up to 5.5 million cubic yards to stabilize and protect barrier island and wetlands

NEW ORLEANS — The Department of Interior’s Minerals Management Service (MMS) will provide up to 5.5 million cubic yards of Outer Continental Shelf (OCS) sand for a shoreline stabilization and marsh creation project at Pelican Island, Plaquemines Parish, Louisiana.  (07/08/2008)  


Minerals Management Service Awards $18 Million Grant to Louisiana for Coastal Restoration

NEW ORLEANS — The Minerals Management Service (MMS) has awarded an $18 million grant to the State of Louisiana through the Coastal Impact Assistance Program (CIAP) for the Barataria Land Bridge Dedicated Dredging project.  (06/09/2008)   


MMS Incorporates Revenue Sharing Rules

WASHINGTON - The Minerals Management Service proposes to issue regulations for distribution of qualified Outer Continental Shelf revenues from certain federal Gulf of Mexico leases in accordance with the provisions of the Gulf of Mexico Energy Security Act of 2006 (GOMESA).  (05/27/2008)

HOUSTON — With approximately 72 percent of the Gulf of Mexico’s oil production coming from wells drilled in 1,000 feet (305 meters) of water or greater, advancement into deepwater Gulf of Mexico (GOM) continues as offshore operators meet the challenges presented in exploring and developing this energy frontier.  (05/05/2008)


Minerals Management Service Approves Development Plans for First Use of Floating Production Storage Offloading Facility in Gulf of Mexico

Cascade-Chinook Project will use FPSO in deepwater Gulf of Mexico

NEW ORLEANS — Minerals Management Service’s Gulf of Mexico Region approved today development plans for the Cascade-Chinook oil and natural gas project located in the Walker Ridge area of the Gulf of Mexico, approximately 165 miles offshore Louisiana in 8,200 feet of water.  (04/29/2008) 


MMS Rule Enhances Hurricane Safety of Offshore Platforms

WASHINGTON - The U.S. Department of the Interior’s Minerals Management Service (MMS) issued a final rule in today’s Federal Register to improve the survivability of offshore platforms and increase environmental safety during hurricane events.  (04/15/2008)
