Notary Service at the Library

We are happy to be able to offer the services of a Notary Public at our libraries.

Tips:

• Call before you visit to ensure that the Notary will be available.

• You will be expected to prove your identity when you appear before the Notary. The ideal form of ID will be current and show the name, a signature, and a photo or physical description (such as a valid driver’s license, state identification card, military ID, or passport). Birth certificates and social security cards are not suitable ID for this purpose. If you are a special case, ask about the particular rules regarding a credible identifying witness.

• We don’t have a Notary Public who can speak any foreign language at this time. The signer must be able to communicate in English.

• Your document should contain the proper notarial certificate (end statement describing the actions of the Notary) where the Notary will sign and affix the seal. There are several types, specific to the kind of document being notarized. The notary may have certificates available for use, if you know what type (acknowledgment or jurat) you need, but cannot, by law, advise you on this point.

• The charge is $2.50 per signatory (person signing) per document.

• The signer usually must appear in person before the Notary. Do not sign the document in advance.

• Notaries Public are not attorneys licensed to practice law in the State of Tennessee, and may not give legal advice or accept fees for legal advice.
