Information Resources Management
Mission
The Southeast Fisheries Science Center (SEFSC) maintains several applications and web servers that support the Southeast Region and Headquarters.  These servers have been designated the repository for the Southeast Region's fishery data collection systems. The purpose of the computer systems within the SEFSC is to service the biologists, scientists, statisticians, and economists within the region and nation by providing an organized set of related fishery data as well as select software tools to be used in the fulfillment of their IT needs.

Organization
Information Resources Management has established two groups to provide the computer services necessary to maintain the Southeast Fisheries Science Center's diverse user communities computing needs.

The Customer Services Group is responsible for all hardware and associated software for each server and work station housed at the SEFSC.  They are required to ensure the systems are operational and available to users during business hours.  They are required to maintain continual service of the communications network with the SEFSC and region.

The Program Development Group is responsible for software application development and the data collection systems processing on the host servers.  They are responsible for the design and development of the database containing the collection data.  They are required to develop all entry methods, update, edit, and validation capabilities, reporting and retrieval requirements, plus procedures and guidelines for using the system.

Responsibilities Technical Resources
Within the SEFSC, the Information Resources Management Division (IRM) has been chartered to maintain the computer systems and associated communications networks.
  • The IRM is to provide direction for the Center, Laboratories and Offices within the region on computer related issues, as well as participate in the establishment of guidelines for computer services with Headquarters.

  • The IRM is responsible  for installation, maintenance, and up-keep of all the computer hardware associated with the servers and work stations.
  • All hardware and software associated with the communications for the accessing the servers and work stations falls within the duties of the IRM.
  • The IRM has been designated the responsibility of developing and maintaining the database system associated with the data collection system; providing application programming for SEFSC users; providing technical and consulting assistance in the area of software usage; and providing training in the use of the system applications.
SEFSC is well connected to the scientific community and the world wide web via the high speed Internet II backbone.  We also have a fractional T1 connection to the NOAA network. Our campus LAN is primarily 100 MB switched ethernet.

The center maintains multiple Unix systems to support scientific and administrative applications.  Besides supporting commercial and custom software applications in a variety of languages, these systems support our relational database environment.  These systems are regularly refreshed to ensure that they
meet or exceed operating requirements of the center, demonstrating our commitment to enterprise data integration using advanced Oracle applications and
systems.

We have a number of NT 4.0 and Windows 2000 servers which support administrative tasks such as data storage, network printing, file sharing for the center.
There is an additional Window 2000 server supporting GIS application development.
