This property, formerly called the Rhode Island Inn, is a multi-unit, multi-level brick structure which was being used as a hotel when it first came to the attention of the United States Attorney’s in April, 2003. Prior to that time, the Metropolitan Police Department had received numerous complaints that the property was being used to facilitate prostitution. As a result of these complaints, the Metropolitan Police Department conducted an undercover investigation during which it sent a female undercover officer into the Inn posing as a prostitute entertaining three different customers. As a result of that investigation, the desk clerk was arrested and charged with Maintaining a Disorderly House. In April, 2005, a District of Columbia Superior Court Judge found the desk clerk guilty and sentenced her to six months probation. Prior to the trial, however, the owners of the property sold the Inn. The new owners were contacted by 5D Community Prosecutor Rhonda Redwood, who made them aware of the problems with the previous ownership. The property has since been converted to community housing for the mentally ill. The Fifth District of the Metropolitan Police Department reports no further problems with this property.
