Neighbors of this two-story, small, detached home complained about
drug activity at this residence since 2003. Drug dealers sold drugs
in and around the property all hours of the day and night. Extensive
foot and car traffic existed on this small, quiet, residential street
and users and dealers could frequently be seen loitering in front
of and in back of the property.
Due to numerous drug complaints, MPD’s Fifth District executed
a search warrant on the location in July, 2003. One arrest was made
and three rocks of crack cocaine were recovered from the location.
It was discovered that a relative of the owners was residing in
the residence at that time. The United States Attorney’s Office
contacted the owners, who resided in Maryland, and began discussions
regarding abatement. The owners recognized the severity of the problem
and subsequently sold the property to a corporation in July, 2004.
Extensive renovations were done to the residence and it is now listed
for sale. The 5D Community Prosecutor spoke with the listing agent,
Gerald Donovan, who informed our Office that he was aware of the
home’s drug history and that he keeps a close eye on the property
to make sure that it remains secure and unoccupied until its sale.
The 5D Community Prosecutor also spoke with the residents of Hamlin
Place and they are very pleased with the transition that the house
has made.
