This property is a small apartment building and part of a larger
complex of buildings known as the Vistas. Because of numerous complaints
and arrests due to drug activity, the U.S. Attorney’s Office
identified this building as a nuisance property.
The Community Prosecutor at the U.S. Attorney’s
Office contacted the owner and held numerous meetings with him along
with officials from the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) and
the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, which was
subsidizing the payment of rent for the low income tenants of the
building. In the year prior to contacting the owner of the property,
there were 81 calls for service at this property. During that same
period of time, MPD recovered large quantities of crack cocaine,
firearms and ammunition as a result of search warrants executed
by MPD on apartments in this building.
As a result of the meetings, the owner hired full time Special
Police Officers (SPOs) who remain on duty during both daytime and
evening hours. The Community Prosecutor provided barring notice
training to the owner and to the SPOs. The SPOs are now working
with the police to bar individuals not on the lease and to evict
tenants who are involved in criminal activity. Tenants involved
in drug nuisance activity have been evicted, and the SPOs actively
bar individuals not lawfully on the property. The owner has also
installed video cameras on and around the property, allowing MPD
officers and SPOs access to these cameras.
As a result of cooperation between the owner, the U.S. Attorney’s
Office and MPD, drug nuisance activity at this property has been
severely curtailed and the residents at 2506 Pomeroy Road are safer
and enjoy a better quality of life.
