This 18 unit apartment building was once infested with trash, debris and abandoned autos and known by police and residents as a haven for drug trafficking and drug abuse. From 2001 to the present, the address generated over 215 calls for service as well as 36 arrests on drug related offenses. 4810 Quarles Street, NE harbored a clear and present threat to residents as well the safety of local school children from Ron Brown Middle School and a day care center located directly across the street. Working together with the Sixth District Police, Ward Seven Core Team and Office of Attorney General, the U.S. Attorney’s Office successfully filed a civil drug nuisance action against the owner of the building. In May, 2004, the court found that the property was a drug nuisance and ordered the owner to take certain actions to abate the nuisance, including hiring security and installing exterior lighting. Subsquently, the owner sold the property to a company which is currently renovating and converting the building to beautifully appointed condos. The Community Prosecutor met with the new owner to ensure that the property will remain drug and nuisance free. Assistant Chief Willie Dandridge is extremely happy with the result of the abatement efforts.
