Nuisance Property Abatement Success Story

5310 New Hampshire Avenue, NW
(PSA 403) (Ward 4)

5310 New Hampshire Avenue, NW - (PSA 403) (Ward 4)This property is a single-family brick row house located in the Northwest sector of the city. The community made numerous calls to the Metropolitan Police Department to report constant traffic, late evening parties and loitering at the property. This property was identified as a problem at a community meeting in PSA 403 and confirmed by the Metropolitan Police Department.

The United States Attorney’s Office contacted the owner and scheduled a meeting with her. The owner acknowledged that her son was the cause of the disturbances at the property and asked for assistance in removing her son from the house. The United States Attorney’s Office quickly responded and assisted the owner in drafting a letter to her son stating that he had 60 days in which to vacate the property. Her son complied and left the house as agreed. In September 2004, the Metropolitan Police Department reported that calls for service had dropped to zero since the owner’s son moved. Neighbors report a marked improvement in the community since the property was abated.
