This property is a single family detached house located in the Shephard Park area of Washington, D.C.. The property presented a drug nuisance with numerous complaints to the police about drug activity in and around this location. Neighbors complained of constant foot and vehicle traffic at all times during the day and night from apparent drug sales and purchases. Since 2001, the police executed three search warrants at this location.
This property was brought to the United States Attorney’s Office by an ANC Commissioner and a community activist in 2003. The U.S. Attorney’s Office contacted the owner and scheduled several meetings with her and the Metropolitan Police Department. The owner of the property acknowledged that her tenant had a drug problem and created a problem for the neighborhood. Subsequently, the tenant entered a drug rehabilitation center and has returned to the home. Since the tenant’s treatment and return to the home, the traffic has lessened and the complaints to the Metropolitan Police Department have been drastically reduced.
Through the collective efforts of the United States Attorney’s Office, the Metropolitan Police Department and Councilman Fenty’s Office, the problems with this property have been resolved. A neighbor stated, “the impact made by the U.S. Attorney’s Office has made a positive change in our community.”
