What is the Reef Medics Program?
Reef Medics is a volunteer program of the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary. Trained individuals assist sanctuary biologists with the assessment and restoration of coral reefs in the Florida Keys.
What Do Reef Medic Volunteers Do?
Volunteers use sanctuary vessels to observe and record coral health using handheld GPS units, underwater cameras and other tools. Reef Medics look for signs of coral disease, bleaching and damage from hit and run boat groundings. Occasionally, Reef Medics and sanctuary biologists perform emergency re-stabilization of dislocated corals caused by boat groundings. Most Reef Medic missions take place during the summer months when sea conditions are best for this type of work.
Do I Need to be a SCUBA Diver?
Swimming and snorkeling are the only aquatic skills required before attending the Reef Medics training. SCUBA is not needed by Reef Medics. Current First Aid and CPR certification is required.
