The purpose of 2nd NCER was to provide a forum for physical, biological, and social scientists, engineers, resource managers, planners and policy-makers to share their knowledge and research results concerning ecosystem restoration throughout the United States. The public forum allowed attendees to exchange information and "lessons learned" on opportunities for and challenges of achieving ecosystem restoration through partnership. Conference participants had the opportunity to learn about multi-scale ecosystem restoration programs (e.g., Missouri River, Great Lakes , Everglades, San Francisco Bay/Delta, Chesapeake Bay Columbia River, Louisiana Coastal Area, Puget Sound, Mississippi River) and what has contributed to success, as well as lessons learned from these programs. The roles of policy, planning and science in establishing goals and performance expectations for achieving successful and sustainable ecosystem restoration were also explored. Sustainable restoration of the Greater Everglades requires effective integration of Planning, Policy and Science. The purpose of the Greater Everglades Ecosystem Restoration (GEER) Conference is to provide a forum for restoration practitioners – decision makers, engineers, planners, resource managers, scientists – to share their knowledge and challenges concerning restoration of this national treasure – the Greater Everglades. So, what is this vast and wonderful system we call the Greater Everglades? The Greater Everglades is an interlinked complex of natural and human ecosystems from the Kissimmee River at the top through Lake Okeechobee, the Loxahatchee and St. Lucie estuaries to the east and the Caloosahatchee Estuary to the west, southward to the Everglades and Florida Bay with the Keys at the bottom; and, from Biscayne Bay and other coastal systems on the east to Big Cypress, Ten Thousand Islands and other coastal systems on the west. In May 2004, a science workshop was held with the purpose of provid ing a forum for discussing A.R.M. Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge science needs as well as providing an overview of research already being conducted on the refuge. Objectives of the workshop included making a broader audience aware of the mana gement issues on the refuge that need science support; illustrating current research on the refuge, and opportunities for others to conduct research on the refuge; and beginning (or continuing) dialog among researchers and refuge staff to provide a foundation for future collaboration and partnerships. This First National Conference on Ecosystem Restoration (NCER) was held December 6-10, 2004 in Orlando, Florida at the Wyndham Palace. It enabled national and international information exchange on many issues involved in landscape-scale ecosystem restoration. Fellow scientists, educators, and restoration planners, managers and decision-makers met to discuss similarities and differences and successes and failures of ecosystem restoration programs throughout the country. This meeting reviewed and discussed current fire management and research in pineland ecosystems, with an emphasis on pine rocklands, in South Florida and the Bahamas. The results of these discussions will be used to create a vision, goals, and action items for a new working group focused on fostering pine rockland fire ecology research and informed management practices.  The Florida Bay and Adjacent Marine Systems Science Conference and the Greater Everglades Ecosystem Restoration (G.E.E.R.) Science Conference was, for the first time ever, held in conjunction to provide a joint forum for the exchange of information among physical, biological and social scientists.
The Joint Conference on the Science and Restoration of the Greater Everglades and Florida Bay Ecosystem was conducted April 13-18, 2003 at the Westin Innisbrook, just 25 miles from Tampa. Learn more...
The Informational Workshop Series was a series of five meetings conducted by USGS's South Florida Ecosystem Program to present current research and receive comments on future direction. Through interactions at these Informational Workshops, attendees helped guide the USGS in its mission of providing science information, modeling and decision support tools relevant to the CERP and GEER.  The purpose of the GEER conference was to provide a forum for physical, biological, and social scientists to share their knowledge and research results concerning Everglades restoration. The objectives of the conference was to define specific restoration goals, determine the best approaches to meet these goals, and provide benchmarks that could be used to measure the success of restoration efforts over time. To these ends, the conference recognized the need to synthesize information gathered since the first Everglades conference, the interdisciplinary nature of Everglades restoration, and the need to adapt scientific understanding to management action. The South Florida Restoration Science Forum website highlights the powerful connection between science and management decisions in restoration efforts. You can see first-hand how the public's investment in science is paying off in support of better management decisions and restoration of imperiled south Florida Ecosystems - including the  internationally recognized, globally significant Everglades. The Forum affords a unique opportunity for everyone to see highlights of the most significant restoration science and management efforts underway. Hundreds of scientists from numerous organizations have prepared over five hundred posters and exhibits to show you the strength of the science that is done to have science-based decisions in managing the restoration effort. The forum is being held by the Working Group of the South Florida Ecosystem Restoration Task Force whoses member organizations are responsible for the multi billion dollar restoration projects in south Florida.
