Drug Market Intervention (DMI) Initiative Trainings

BJA is accepting applications from interested teams in response to its Request for Commitment solicitation for the Drug Market Intervention (DMI) initiative trainings. The initiative consists of a continuum of three trainings for up to ten sites. Each site team is comprised of a law enforcement official, a local prosecutor, a community leader, and a social service provider. Each team will receive a site visit from a BJA technical assistance provider along with ongoing support to assist local teams adapt the DMI model to their unique local context. National partners also are currently developing a training manual that interested jurisdictions can use to implement DMI locally. Applications are due August 21, 2008.

Project Safe Neighborhoods Anti-Gang Training

On September 26–28, 2007, the Department of Justice (DOJ) sponsored the Project Safe Neighborhoods Anti-Gang Training pilot in Dover, Delaware. Approximately 160 law enforcement officers and criminal justice practitioners attended this training, which was delivered by DOJ law enforcement agencies and other criminal justice professionals. Intervention, prevention, suppression, and reentry strategies were presented, as well as a briefing on national and regional gang trends, a community gang problem assessment, and tips for working with cooperating witnesses and confidential informants. DOJ Announces Anti-Gang Funding to Chicago, Detroit (8/12/2008) Deputy Attorney General Mark R. Filip announced the intent to award $2 million to both Chicago and Detroit as part of an expansion of the Department of Justice’s Comprehensive Anti-Gang Initiative. The awards are designed to help law enforcement develop plans to combat gang violence in these cities and the surrounding suburbs, and to implement their own anti-gang strategies using the three components of prevention, enforcement, and prisoner reentry. Waterloo Felon Sentenced for Possession of Ammunition (4/7/2008) A Waterloo, Iowa man charged with being a felon in possession of ammunition has been sentenced to 70 months in prison. Prior felony convictions for possession with intent to deliver marijuana while in possession of a firearm prohibit the man from carrying a gun or ammunition. More>
