Midwest Value Added Agriculture Conference

The Hiawatha Resource Conservation and Development (RC&D;) and River Country RC&D; Councils are holding a two-day Midwest Value Added Agriculture Conference in Rochester, MN January 22 through January 23, 2009. The focus of this year’s conference is “Profiting from Renewable Energy & Regional Food. The event will take place at the Mayo Civic Center in Rochester, Minnesota.

Area 2 Soil Scientist, Jeff Hellerich, analyzing the soil profile at the Sauk Valley Man prehistoric archaeological site, Todd County, MN.

Soils and Archaeology – Sauk Valley Man Revisited

NRCS Area 2 Soil Scientist, Jeff Hellerich, recently conducted an in depth analysis of the soils at the Sauk Valley Man prehistoric site in Todd County. Jeff was part of an investigatory team composed of archeologists, tribal members, students, and the landowner. Goals of the two day inquiry included an effort to extract additional information from the site regarding the context of the human remains found there, how the remains may have arrived at that location (i.e. natural vs. cultural processes), and if there were other cultural deposits, features, or artifacts in the vicinity of the site that might be related to or associated with the remains.

U.S. Department of Agriculture's Natural Resources Conservation Service Chief Arlen Lancaster announced the release of the interim final rule for State Technical Committees, which amended requirements regarding the composition and responsibilities of these advisory committees nationwide.
