Welcome to the U.S. Probation Office for the District of New Hampshire. The Probation Office is the investigative arm of the U.S. Courts and is charged with the responsibility to assist the U.S. Court in the impartial administration of justice through the investigation and supervision of individuals charged with and convicted of federal crimes. The U.S. Probation Office covers the entire State of New Hampshire. The U.S. Probation Office is the only federal law enforcement agency not under the Executive Branch of the Government.

The primary mission of the U.S. Probation Office is the protection of the public. The Pretrial Unit begins this process by ensuring that individuals, who have been released to the community, charged with federal crimes are provided with the necessary field supervision and assistance so as not to pose a threat to the community and will appear for all their Court hearings.

The Presentence Investigation Unit, once the offender is convicted of a federal crime, completes a thorough investigation into both the offense of conviction as well as the offender’s history. The presentence investigation is used by the Court to fashion an appropriate sentence and to set conditions for any future supervision.

The Supervision Unit is responsible for all convicted offenders who either received a sentence of probation or were released to the community on what is called supervised release following the incarceration portion of their sentence. The unit also supervises those offenders who are still under the jurisdiction of the U.S. Parole Commission or who have been released to the community on military parole.
