Sequencing Unusual STR Alleles

Members of the human identity testing community can submit unusual STR alleles to the the Biochemical Science Division at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) for sequencing. Sequencing is free to the submitting agency .

Some of these unusual STR alleles possess point mutations in prime binding sites leading to null alleles while others are "off-ladder" variants. Sequencing these unusual alleles helps to reveal the molecular basis for their variation.

Samples requires at least 10 ng of genomic DNA. To submit a sample or if you have questions about submitting a sample for STR allele sequencing, contact either Margaret Kline (301-975-3134; margaret.kline@nist.gov) or John Butler (301-975-4049; john.butler@nist.gov).
