Conrad Presses Army Corps on North Dakota Water Projects
Senator Meets in Washington with Corps Leaders
Washington – U.S. Senator Kent Conrad pressed the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Tuesday for continued progress on water projects important to North Dakota. He met with Colonel Michael J. Price, Commander of the Army Corps' St. Paul District and discussed projects affecting Fargo-Moorhead, Minot and the Souris River Basin, Devils Lake, Grafton, and Valley City.
"I urged the Corps to continue evaluating options to reduce the impacts of the Fargo-Moorhead diversion project on upstream areas," Conrad said. "I also asked that the Corps step up efforts to advance the reconnaissance study of the Souris River basin that could determine whether there is federal interest for a flood control project or projects in the basin."
Col. Price briefed the Senator on the Corps' recommendations for modifications to the Fargo-Moorhead diversion project, which will be presented to the Diversion Authority later this week and the funding needs for the project. He also advised the Senator that the Corps will undertake a re-evaluation of the Grafton flood control project in an effort to advance it.
During the meeting Conrad also explored Fiscal Year 2013 and 2014 funding issues for a number of the projects. "It is vital that these projects stay on track. We need to monitor progress carefully, and be ready to act immediately to any complicating issues that may come up."
