Summary:

The New Jersey Office of Clean Energy (OCE) offers rebates to state residents who purchase certain energy efficient home appliances. As of January 2, 2013 there are no active mail-in rebates available; however, incentives for efficient lighting may still be claimed. The program website has a search engine where consumers can look up local retailers offering discounts on compact fluorescent lighting products. The OCE also offers a $50 rebate for refrigerator/freezer recycling. Rebates are not available for the purchase of new refrigerators or freezers.

When mail-in rebates are active, as a general rule, all appliances must be Energy Star rated; however, additional requirements may apply to different types of appliances. Rebate requests must generally be made no later than one month after the purchase of a qualifying appliance and be accompanied by proof of purchase and product information. Rebates may be limited to one per customer for some equipment types although this is not always the case. In order to be eligible for a rebate, consumers must be customers of an electric utility that collects the Societal Benefits Charge on customer bills. The electric utilities that do this are Atlantic City Electric; Jersey Central Power & Light; PSE&G Electric; and Rockland Electric Company. This limitation applies to the refrigerator/freezer recycling program but does not apply to energy efficient lighting incentives.
