• ORISE Historian Fellowship

JPAC also offers fellowships for historians through ORISE. The Research Participation Program for the Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command (JPAC) provides opportunities to participate in historical research projects. Fellowship positions are available at the post-master's and post-doctoral level to individuals with degrees in history or a related field.

Fellowships are one year, and can be renewed for up to three years for post-baccalaureate and master's degree fellows, and up to five years for postdoctoral fellows.

Forensic Science Academy

In 2008, the Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command’s Central Identification Laboratory opened the Forensic Science Academy, an advanced forensic anthropology program consisting of five courses, taught under the auspices of the Department of Defense.

Students (Fellows) receive training in a variety of areas, including identifying and reconstructing fragmentary and complete human skeletons, establishing a biological profile, skeletal pathology and trauma, photography, terrestrial and underwater archaeological equipment and methods, Geographic Information Systems and remote sensing, and DNA sampling.

Fellows are assigned skeletal cases and are required to submit forensic anthropology reports detailing their findings. After extensive classroom instruction, Fellows spend five weeks on a military search and recovery team in Southeast Asia and assist in the archaeological excavation of a crash site or burial. Their final week is “in the field” examining a large known-identity skeletal collection in Thailand.

Students are accepted into the program each fall based on academic performance and recommendation of faculty members. They receive a one-time stipend and can arrange to receive up to 15 semester hours of credit through their university. Applications are accepted throughout the year.
