The Library is a key resource for making food and nutrition research accessible to all Americans.

What is a NEL Systematic Review?

A NEL evidence-based systematic review is a state-of-the-art method for evaluating scientific evidence to answer a precise question or series of questions. Nutrition Evidence Library systematic reviews are conducted by a multidisciplinary team of scientific experts, and based on a predefined approach and criteria. Meticulous methods and electronic tools are used to describe and document each step to ensure, objectivity, transparency, and reproducibility of the process.

NEL Systematic Review Process:

  • Recruit multidisciplinary team
  • Formulate systematic review questions
  • Identify and select relevant studies to review
  • Conduct literature review for each question
  • Extract evidence and critically appraise each study

NEL Evidence Abstractors: After completing a training program, abstractors analyze peer-reviewed articles and draft evidence worksheets, which form the foundation for answering each systematic review question. This national service volunteer opportunity:

  • Broadens one's professional knowledge
  • Develops literature review and analysis skills
  • Increases professional exposure

We are currently not recruiting new abstractors, but check here again for our Call for NEL Evidence Abstractors in the future.
