2013 All American Bowl
The U.S. Army All-American Bowl is an annual game between the best high school football players in the country, held each January at the Alamodome in San Antonio, TX. The event provides an outreach opportunity for the Army to show students that the U.S. military needs young people with technology skills, too.
2012 Summer Hire Expo
The TARDEC Summer Hire Program exposes aspiring high school and college students to the multiple engineering and technological possibilities that the U. S. Army Tank Automotive Research, Development & Engineering Center (TARDEC) houses. The overall purpose of the program is to show these individuals what science and engineering can offer as a career, while highlighting the many benefits TARDEC has to offer. Students also get to experience technology that could ultimately lead to enhancing the future forces, ensuring that our Soldiers are an agile, lethal and survival force. Exposing and enlightening talented young individuals to the critical role TARDEC plays for the Soldier and the Global War on Terror influences them to pursue an education within the engineering and scientific fields. Upon their college graduation, we hope these students keep TARDEC in the forefront of their ultimate career choice.
The students are assigned to projects that are developed by experienced and established TARDEC Senior Engineers. The projects are selected for the Summer Hire Program based on how beneficial they will be to existing TARDEC programs, while providing the students an opportunity to apply their own knowledge and skills in a professional working environment. Serving as team leaders for the project team are TARDEC Junior Engineers, which mainly consist of engineering interns or college engineering co-ops. The Junior Engineers have an opportunity to receive firsthand experience in project management and team leadership, a trait that could be crucial to long-term management success. The Junior Engineers, along with their summer hire teammates, are responsible for regularly reporting project status and accomplishments to their respective Senior Engineers.
2012 GVSETS
The 2012 Ground Vehicle Systems Engineering and Technology Symposium (GVSETS) was held Aug. 14-16, 2012, in Troy, MI. Several commerical industry representatives were on hand discussing their plans to enhance collaboration with the Army and other services, while military leadership revealed needs that could lead to mutually beneficial relationships.
2012 U.S. Senior Open
Soldiers from the Detroit Arsenal added a patriotic touch to the 2012 U.S. Senior Open, which was held at the Indianwood Golf & Country Club in Lake Orion, MI. During Wednesday's practice round, Indianwood designated the 448-yard 16th hole as its “military hole," and flew the Stars and Stripes from the flagstick. When players reached the green, a caddie delivered the flagstick to a Soldier stationed there. The Soldier kept the flag off the ground until a caddie replaced the flagstick when each group left the green. Also, the club admitted military personnel and veterans at no charge that day.
2012 Detroit Grand Prix
When IndyCar Series racing came to Detroit’s Belle Isle on June 3, TARDEC supported the event with a display that included several Army vehicles, robots and other equipment. Events like these connect TARDEC to the broader automotive world, and may set the stage for collaboration in safety and performance developments that interest all of us. In turn, IndyCar sent a custom-designed racecar with a back seat to the Detroit Arsenal to give several associates a taste of turbocharged power.
Automotive Research Center (ARC)
The annual ARC conference highlights one of our most important academic partnerships. Led by the University of Michigan, ARC pulls together several colleges and industry partners to coordinate vital research, particularly in modeling and simulation studies. The science and technology conference took place on May 21-22 with many guest speakers from the Army, private business and universities.
Robotics Engineering and Technology (RET) Week
RET Week is one of TARDEC’s key outreach events, introducing a variety of middle school and high school students to a possible future in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) careers. Classrooms from all over southeast Michigan spend the day getting immersed in — and possibly inspired by — innovations in robotics, advanced energy and computer technology through interactive displays and activities.
