A family that earns $27,000, but spends $36,000 and has run up a credit card debt of $165,000 is on the brink of financial ruin. Proportionally, that's exactly where our federal government is today.
Mr. Speaker: The House is poised to pass HR 325. I respect the sincerity of its supporters, but I must firmly dissent. This bill accommodates spending at ruinous levels far beyond the limits set by the House budget. It sets a terrible precedent by abolishing the debt limit for nearly four months, giving an unlimited credit card to this administration.
On January 6, the Sacramento Bee published a 1000-word polemic by Dan Morain attacking my opposition to the "fiscal cliff deal." To its credit, the Bee published my response to the public policy issues involved, but the innuendoes, inaccuracies and omissions in Mr. Morain's column are so stark as to require a longer reply for the record.
