Number of Positions: Up to three volunteer internships available, dates flexible May – Aug 2013:

Location: John H Kerr Reservoir, Boydton VA. Kerr Reservoir is a 50,000 acre lake located on the Roanoke River on the border of Virginia and North Carolina. Park Rangers for the Army Corps of Engineers operate numerous campgrounds, picnic areas, hiking trails and boat ramp facilities. The Corps also operates the Joseph S.J. Tanner Environmental Education Center, a popular field trip destination for school, youth, and church groups. The center is also opened throughout the summer for use by the general public.

Description: Work within the Tanner Environmental Education Center under the supervision of a Park Ranger. Greet guests, answer questions about local flora and fauna, conduct and assist with environmental interpretive programs. Programs include school field trips, classroom presentations, weekend events, and campground interpretive programs. All programs will highlight local ecosystems, wildlife, natural / cultural history, natural resource, and water safety. Assist in caring for live reptile and non-venomous snake displays. Work hours and days will vary; hours per week = 40, with a commitment of at least 300 hours over eight weeks.

Qualifications: Interested individuals should enjoy meeting and working with a variety of people of all ages. A background or interest in conservation, ecology, education, parks and recreation, or the natural resources is required. Preference will be given to candidates pursuing a degree in a natural resources, education, or recreation field. Must be at least 18 years of age, posses a valid driver’s license, be a US citizen or Permanent Resident. *IF SELECTED, background check and finger printing are required.*

Boundary Line Inspections – Requires extensive hiking through steep rough terrain.

Two Park Host Volunteer Couples:

Come volunteer with the Army Corps of Engineers! John H. Kerr Reservoir is a 50,000-acre lake extending 39 miles up the Roanoke River along 800 miles of wooded, cove-studded shoreline on the border of Virginia and North Carolina. Park Rangers operate numerous campgrounds, day use areas and boat ramp facilities on the lake. This announcement is for two separate volunteer Park Host Couples at two of our Day Use locations that also happen to have some of the most beautiful sunsets on the entire lake: Rudds Creek Day Use and Palmer Point Day Use.

Training for volunteer service begins Tuesday April 23, 2013 through Friday April 26th, 2013. Volunteer service will start Friday May 03, 2013 to September 08, 2013. Volunteer hours include 9 AM – 6 PM each Friday, Saturday, and Sunday (including the Monday of Memorial Day weekend, Thursday July 4th and the Monday of Labor day weekend).

Major duties: include greeting the public and providing customer service. Work inside fee booth, inform park visitors about the $4 day use fee and collect money. Provide monetary change (volunteer funds will be used to provide change). Answer telephone and radio calls. (Updated 04/10/2013)

Description: Volunteer will reside at the Park Attendant campsite directly adjacent to the gate house. Free electricity, water and sewer will be provided.

 

Shoreline Management Volunteer: This Position is Year Round.

The staff at John H. Kerr is looking for volunteers (Year Around) to assist its shoreline management section with converting files to digital media. Volunteers will need to be familiar with windows based computers, Adobe Acrobat professional software as well as digital scanners. Skills necessary for the position will require attention to detail, work in an office setting, filing, copying, scanning documents and familiarity with computers.
