Hurricane Sandy was an unprecedented storm that had a devastating impact on New Jersey.  Residents with damaged or lost property may be eligible for federal assistance. Additionally, residents of the New Jersey counties most severely impacted by Sandy will be eligible to receive Disaster Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (D-SNAP) benefits to help cover the costs of food. On January 14, 2013 Congressman Sires spoke to the North Jersey Transportation Planning Authority including Board of Trustee members and elected officials in Newark at their first annual meeting.

Hoboken Transportation Terminal with Vice President Biden

On November 18, 2012, Congressman Sires toured the Hoboken transportation terminal with Vice President Biden, Hoboken Mayor Dawn Zimmer, Senators Lautenberg and Menendez, and New Jersey Lt. Governer Kim Guadagno. Congressman Sires spoke about rapid recovery efforts, and getting residents of the 13th District back in their homes.

  • Madam Speaker, it has been nearly eight weeks since Superstorm Sandy struck our shores and devastated an entire region. Eight weeks- and Congress has yet to send a disaster assistance package to the affected states.

  • Mr. Speaker, today we mourn as a nation with Newtown, Connecticut and the Sandy Hook Elementary community. My thoughts and prayers go out to the victims of this horrendous tragedy and their families. On Friday, 27 people, including children, had their futures stolen from them as a result of another senseless act of violence. My heart breaks for their loved ones and the community of Newtown

  • Hurricane Sandy was an unprecedented storm that left a devastating impact on our communities in New Jersey- damaging homes, businesses, and leaving millions without power. Hudson, Essex, Middlesex, and Union counties, were hit particularly hard by Sandy. We have been fortunate to have a large team of federal, state, and local responders to assist in recovery efforts.

(Washington, D.C.)- Today, Congressman Sires released the following statement in response to the President’s State of the Union speech before Congress: “Last night, President Obama laid out his the agenda before Congress to prioritize job growth and debt reduction in a responsible manner. Like the President, I believe that the strength of our economy coincides with the strength of our middle class. America is built on the principle that no matter ones lot in life, every citizen should be offered the same opportunities to thrive. To that end, I was encouraged by the President’s proposals to expand pre-school education, increase investments in job training, and raise the minimum wage.

(Jersey City, NJ) – On February 7th, Congressman Albio Sires presented the Congressional Award’s Bronze Medal to Margot Camino of Perth Amboy, NJ. The Congressional Award, established by the United States Congress in 1979, recognizes young Americans who set and achieve goals in four key areas: personal development, physical fitness, expedition/exploration, and voluntary public service.
