On January 14th, 2013, Zdenka Willis, Director, US IOOS Program Office, traveled to Galway, Ireland and met with Mike Devane, Chairman of SmartBay Ireland and the SmartBay team.  SmartBay Ireland  is responsible for the establishment and development of a National Research, Test and Demonstration facility to support the application and translation of research and provide platforms for the testing and demonstration of new technologies and solutions in the Marine and related sectors, http://SmartBay.ie/. The meeting entailed exploring potential multi-national and industry partnerships between US IOOS and SmartBay.

Additionally, Zdenka had the chance to meet with Mike Gillooly, Director of the Ocean Science and Information Systems Group (Marine Institute) to discuss the activities of the Marine Institute, the national agency responsible for Marine Research, Technology Development and Innovation (RTDI).  The Institute was formed in 1991 for marine development and research, to promote economic development, create employment and protect the environment. The Marine Institute runs sustained observing systems such as buoys and tide gauges in support of EU regulations, and operates 2 oceanographic vessels. More information can be found at http://www.marine.ie/Home/.   Zdenka also had the opportunity to meet with Professor Mike Hartnett, Professor of Civil Engineering, National University Galway, who has just deployed Ireland’s first HF Radar system.  The CODAR SeaSonde was deployed in Galway Bay and is currently undergoing calibration. Zdenka and Mike discussed incorporating data from the system in Galway Bay in the Global HF Radar system in the future.
