Dear CSWA Affiliated Society Members,

Implementation of mental health parity laws is one of the missions of CSWA. Two recent articles show the work that still remains to accomplish this goal. Mental Health America, one of the most long-term policy organizations advocating for access to mental health (founded in 1909) has published a report, "Parity and Disparity", that shows the way that each state and jurisdiction covers mental health in 15 areas. The entire 54 page report can be found at http://www.mentalhealthamerica.net/sites/default/files/Parity%20or%20Disparity%20Report%20FINAL.pdf  Some states have made good progress toward mental health parity including Massachusetts, Delaware, Minnesota, Maryland, and New Jersey. Other states, including Arizona, Washington, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Idaho, have serious deficits in providing adequate coverage of mental health assessment and treatment. I hope all members will look at the report to see how your state ranks in this seminal report.

A summary of the report published by the Kaiser Family Foundation provides a good overview at http://kaiserhealthnews.org/news/even-with-coverage-expansion-access-to-mental-health-services-poses-challenges/

CSWA is aware of the challenges we face to achieve true mental health parity and will keep providing information on this important topic to members and advocating for parity at the national level. Keeping state legislators aware of this problem is also crucial. The more information we have on this major topic, the more we can work toward solving the problems with access to mental health treatment for our patients that we face.
